ANCIENT VOICES (FLUTES/DRUMS & RICH SYNTH FLOWS)

WORLD MUSIC (SYNTH)

David & Diane Arkenstone working in their ‘World Music’ inspired music mode and under the guise of their Ah Nee Mah pseudonym. ‘Ancient Voices’ sees the spirits of the past come alive in 9 magical sound paintings, with synths, flutes, drums and other worldly instruments blend with the echoes of ancestral voices from long ago, and the effect is truly magical indeed. The album spans a universe of soundscaping that in evocative and inspirational, with the flute carrying most of the melody lines over symphonic waves of keyboard textures and melodies with gentle percussive rhythms guiding the way. Most of the music is on the relaxed end of the scale, with nothing becoming too loud or overstated, but some passages can be dreamier and more relaxed.

SPIRIT OF THE CANYON (FLUTES/STRING SYNTH & DRUMS)

WORLD MUSIC (SYNTH)

David & Diane Arkenstone working in their ‘World Music’ inspired music mode and under the guise of their Ah Nee Mah pseudonym. ‘Spirit Of The Canyon’ is slightly more percussion led than the ‘Ancient Voices’ release, with sweeping strings carrying the main melody lines instead of the flute. These living soundscapes are cinematic and grandiose in style, and will evoke a treasured memory and tribute to the splendour, majesty, and timeless beauty of a natural wonder of the world. The 10 tracks are played on keyboards, native flutes, drums and strings, all magically woven together to create a unique collection of sound paintings of the Grand Canyon.

MIDDLE EARTH [MUSIC INSPIRED BY]

DREAMY/MELODIC (SYNTH)

Ever since synthesizers have been around, fantasy books like Tolkien’s ‘Lord Of The Rings’ have proved to be a perfect inspiration to the world of both the ‘Electronic’ and ‘Progressive/Symphonic’ music genres, and this is one such album from the ‘Symphonic Instrumental’ field, or as some might call it ‘New Age’, and a more superior example of cinematic fantasy music you will struggle to find. It features fifty-six minutes worth of huge melodic symphonic soundscapes, regal grandiose marching themes, folk inspired tunes and haunting ethereal atmospheric passages, all of which could have fitted so perfectly into the recent film production. Each track lasts up to, and over in some cases, five minutes, and every one paints a powerful portrait of ‘Middle Earth’ using keyboards and traditional orchestral instruments, as well as a full choir and acoustic ethnic instruments. The music of the Arkenstone family is an ideal partner to themes such as this, because it portrays the very images seen in recently in the hugely successful film production. David and Diane have created 13 beautifully sensitive evocative tracks for their movie for the imagination – It’s an epic interpretation that will instantaneously transport you into the centre of the fantasy world that is ‘Middle Earth’.

SANCTUM SANCTUORUM

SYMPHONIC SPACE MUSIC (SYNTH)

We know quality when we hear it, and the opening minute of this album heralds a quality the likes of which you will rarely hear on a synth music album of this type! As one immensely pleasurable, glorious sounding string/bass synth soundscape begins another gorgeous lead synth comes in over the top followed by a most joyous choral refrain as the piece stops you in your tracks with its sheer, almost overwhelming beauty. If that track doesn’t get you, the next one is so spiritual that, if tears don’t begin to well up in your eyes, you have no feelings at all, for this is the sound of heaven – Church music the likes of which you’ve never heard before. A galaxian string synth lead of gorgeous, emotive yet delicate qualities, rises up to fill the space inside and outside your head, while the male-female Gregorian choir-like refrains on top just add to the amazing strength and serenity of it all, putting you both at ease and utterly in awe of the music that you are hearing. It really is almost overwhelming, but one of the most beautiful musical experiences I think I’ve ever heard in this genre - Thirteen minutes of absolute inner bliss. 4 similarly moving tracks follow, and all are spiritually, sonically and emotionally enthralling, with some of the most glorious heavenly, celestial synth music around, with choral layers that sound like nothing else in creation. There is a lot of music out there to be lived, but few that truly touch the soul – This is one of the few.

FUTURE LIGHTS (VHS-FANTASTIC EM/LASER SPECTACULAR)

BERLIN SCHOOL (SYNTH)

A Pink Floyd concert would be the nearest rival to the sheer musical and visual spectacle of this set! It’s a stunning visual/aural experience recorded live in 2002 where the visuals of Jean Michel Jarre ‘live’ are coupled with music in a Tangerine Dream style, and it’s a fantastic display on both counts - The sound is perfect and the music, well, it’s perfect too – A better synth music video you simply won’t find as it has all the thrills and spills of a perfect concert setting. It’s an hour long, professionally shot video that offers a birds-eye view of the whole show in amazing picture quality. The light and laser effects throughout are a wonder to behold, so much so that once you start to watch it, you will find that you just have to stay to the end and complete the experience - There is no chance of boredom setting in here, and it will take a lot to divert your attention away from what you are seeing. The editing is incredible, with shots of the group wandering in and out of the overall visual feast, while at times overlaid graphics, used sparingly, just add to the sumptuous nature of the treat that is unfolding before your eyes. Musically, its Berlin School style retro synth with classic compositions that are not only quite immaculate in them selves, but complement the visuals and light/lasers to perfection. A rare treat and one of the finest of its kind, that makes up for the lack of any similar ‘live’ Tangerine Dream video material.

GALAXY (FOR TANGERINE DREAM FANS FOR SURE!)

BERLIN SCHOOL (SYNTH)

Brand new studio album from the East European act that many say is one of the finest ‘Berlin School’ style groups on the planet right now, and this album does that reputation every credit, with a stunning set of tracks that convey all the best facets that two decades of the finest music Tangerine Dream had to offer. Right from the beginning there is warmth to the sequencer work, and a flowing feel to the melody construction that means there are no noticeable gaps in the compositions. Something is always happening – Nothing remains static from any period of time - There is no place where the music stays on one level, and no part where the soundscapes don’t change and develop. From thickly spreading clouds of multi-synths magic, with string synth work to die for, some tracks have an almost Jarre-like quality to the melodies, while still keeping with the absolute best in Teutonic-style atmospheres, and for all the world this music sounds like the magical 70’s have never gone away. It’s all immaculately produced, played and arranged, without a less than engaging track on the entire set. This is electronic music with that sparkling quality that gets the heart pumping and the adrenaline racing – Your eyes glow in wide anticipation as each new track rolls in and brings further waves of pleasure that soak through your whole being as they come an go in flowing perfection. One of the finest albums of its kind you’ll ever hear.

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS-LIVE (2CD)

BERLIN SCHOOL (SYNTH)

This isn’t a band just trying to copy Tangerine Dream, Hell - this IS Tangerine Dream! – Well, it isn’t, actually, but stick a blindfold on, listen to it in a dark or dimly lit room, and believe me, you will NEVER know the difference!!

This really is the best album that Tangerine Dream never recorded – A phrase we’ve often used before, but this time it really does sum this album up in a nutshell. You only have to listen to the twenty-four minute opener with its massed banks of sequencers and wave after wave of that eerie Mellotron choir sound made famous on ‘Phaedra’ and ‘Rubicon’ for proof of what we mean. Put disc 1 on and you are immediately transported back in time to a place around 1974 - You are at that concert - You are listening to Tangerine Dream, and you are as close to 70’s synth musical nirvana as its possible to be without actually hearing the ‘real thing’. Even then, it’s perhaps arguable, with hindsight, as to whether what you hear on this album isn’t actually better than what that was anyway! In terms of sounding like Tangerine Dream, this album’s two hours plus of lengthy music tracks, is superior to most of what many other retro bands have achieved to date, and indeed makes some even seem positively lifeless in comparison. Given that many of you will know just how highly we rate many of those others albums, that will give you some idea of how you are going to achieve a higher level of existence simply by playing and experiencing this album. In its own curious way, although of course it will not be the case, as many more are bound to try their hand, the 70’s synth revival should end here because you cannot improve on perfection. TRUST ME – this is pure classic 70’s TD served up on one seriously hot platter, and not a dull moment from start to finish. The ultimate ‘Berlin School’ album!

DIGITAL NOMAD

Something quite refreshing has come out of the Euro-mainland synth music scene with this 7 track CD! Its quality stuff – varied, incredibly well composed, played and produced - It’s accessible, but not absolutely instant, and above all, it’s varied. The opening track is a sort of synth-classical-techno-tribal hybrid featuring synths, piano, drums and samples, all coming together to magical effect that takes a couple of listens to get into, but you’ll be glad you stuck with it when it finally takes root and finds a deserved place in your head. Thereafter, every one of the remaining 6 tracks takes on something different - You’ll find cosmic, sequencer, ‘Berlin School’, hard techno, melodic and poppy, lurching rhythmic monsters full of synths, drums, samples and layers, and much more. One of the most varied, yet consistent ‘electronic’ albums to come out of the Euro-mainland in 2002 - Superb!

FOUNTAIN OF SECRETS (NEW MUSIC IN HIS BEST STYLE)

SYMPHONIC INSTRUMENTAL (PROG)

Late in 2002 our favourite Austrian multi-instrumentalist returned to the label where it all began for him just over twenty years ago, delivering another fine album of symphonic fantasy music that bridges the divide between the Synth and Prog music markets and beyond better than any other we know. It’s a work of huge breadth and quality, the sort of thing that if it had been a soundtrack to something like the ‘Lord Of The Rings’ films (and much of this CD in particular would indeed be PERFECT in that context), it would elevate both musician and music to well-deserved recognition and worldwide success. We at CDS still consider Gandalf to be the Austrian equivalent of Mike Oldfield. His multi-tracked melodic music comes via a combination of keyboards such as lead and string-synths, organ and Mellotron, plus layers of choral voices, acoustic and electric guitars, basses, drums and percussion (also acoustic and electric) with voices and other effects adding integral textures to that panoramic sound that can only be Gandalf music. ‘Fountain Of Secrets’ recaptures the ‘fantasy world’ feel of the early masterpieces: ‘Journey To An Immaginary Land’, ‘Magic Theatre’, ‘Tale From A Long Forgotten Kingdom’, ‘To Another Horizon’ and ‘Visions’, and the same can be said of the early CBS album, and arguably his biggest seller: ‘From Source To Sea’. Like all the other Gandalf albums before it, ‘Fountains’ is surely destined to become another top seller at CDS (his ‘Source To Sea’ album is still one of CD Services top selling imports, having long since passed four-figure sales status). It is a stunning flowing, mix of melodic variety and sound layering where the music travels but never loses sight of its functions. The music holds you completely transfixed from start to finish. As the journey unfolds and the horizons change, the views become more beautiful. It’s that sort of album – It frees the imagination to take you to wherever your own personal nirvana happens to be. Each track is tuneful, but never twee, merging the right side of accessible, with the long-term side of enjoyment, and it is easily mature enough to class as timeless, just as all the others have always been before it!  So, just settle down, dim the lights and let this one fly – the experience will surely amaze you…
