CAVERN OF SIRENS (DARK SOUNDSCAPES)

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

A 5 track, seventy-two minute CD with strong musical ideas that are inventive and manage to keep your attention throughout the duration of each lengthy composition, whether it be space/cosmic, rhythmic, or both. Track 1 is essentially a brilliant eleven-minute space piece using keyboards, bass synths and subtle percussives such as well-used rain stick effects. This all conjures an exquisite set of expansive synth-choral soundscapes that unfold slowly, with a full, powerful sound and plenty of bottom end bass. Track 2 places greater emphasis on the exotic percussion work as well constructed rhythms push the music along with the multi-synths soaring along all around the percussive framework, then drums and percussion take centre stage for the latter half of the fifteen-minute track. The 3rd track is the best on the album with a wondrous percussive/drum rhythm being maintained for most of the time, while the layers of synths and electronics drift and flow to superb effect over and around the rhythmic heart of the composition, with some quite magical sound patterns emerging as the journey continues. Track 4 is louder and more of a combination of expansive string-synth textures allied to a multi-percussive rhythmic base, with keyboards and choral voices flying high in the mix. The album ends on an exquisite twelve minutes of cosmic music in the familiar, but well constructed Roach style, closing what is probably one of his best collaboration albums in a long time.

LIVE ARCHIVE

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

The exploration of space – The meeting place for flowing multi-textured cosmic forces – Slow motion solar flares of vast electronic soundscapes and the warm heart where love resides. This magnificent 8-track album by two of the giants of cosmic synth music is all of these and more. It’s all about emotion, atmosphere, mood, being ‘out there’, spiritually alive and aware. It’s joyous yet serene, hypnotic but never boring and one of the finest space music albums on, or off, the planet.

WELL OF SOULS

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

Well, if you like your music on the extreme end of spacey and cosmic, look no further than this because it has no less than 132 minutes of the stuff on it! Roach and guests get together to soar, drift, float, flow and fly on a multi-layered synth voyage round the universe and back – And it’s a trip where even the rhythms are spacey! Some stunning music here, but not advised to be heard in one sitting as you may well float out of your corporeal being, never to return!

BLOOD MACHINE

RHYTHMIC (SYNTH)

This album has had injected the missing piece from earlier collaborations with a vengeance, to produce a largely rhythmic-based album that is simply awesome in its musical stature. The rhythms, although mainly electronic one presumes, feel very percussive, and they have a sound that combines the best of both worlds - The crispness of real percussion with the modern power of electronics, in fact some of the best you’ll hear. Equally as importantly are the way the tracks are played, and, to a degree, assembled, with ever shifting layers of smoothly featured yet heart-warming synths and electronics providing a forefront that gives you a real sense of depth and a genuinely three-dimensional sound, all feeling organic and positively vital. The final clincher is that all 8 tracks are of moderate length, ensuring that no one idea drags out too long, but equally feels as though they are linked by a mutually cohesive set of ideas that the two musicians have envisaged as constituting the entire album. It is as an entire listening experience, from start to finish, and that is literally the way this album is best enjoyed, for enjoy it you most certainly will. A triumph!

BODY ELECTRIC

POWERFUL/MELODIC (SYNTH)

The first thing you notice here is the phenomenal production, as the music is really loud, yet crystal clear, allowing you to capture every facet of what is being created. Secondly, it's rhythmic, but for Roach, in a manner that has not previously been witnessed. For example, there are some really deep pounding bass lines that flow with the percussive rhythms to create a swirling rhythmic base that has you hooked right from the start. The opening nine-minute track has a whole load of synth layers - Cosmic, melodic and strings, plus a flute-like synth lead that sails overhead with a gorgeous wordless female vocal that’s flying in the mix. Tremendous! Track 2 starts out with masses of swirling synth pools before a new percussive rhythm is gradually introduced and the sound-shaping process begins. Various layers of keyboards, percussion, samples and effects are gathered together in a mind-boggling array of flowing music that mixes rhythmic, cosmic and melodic in a way rarely heard. Each track that follows is based on the concept of sound-shaping, whereby a setting is found and begun, sometimes spacey, sometimes more rhythmic. Each time the nucleus of the track, which is nearly always rhythmic after the initial intro, has a huge expanse of layers and subtleties added to it, so that you are always on a new musical planet with each, but still within the confines of the same musical universe. Overall, this album is fairly unique in its approach and delivery, and a treat for the ears.

DESERT SOLITAIRE

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

Recorded further down the line from but in a similar pattern to the ‘Western Spaces’ album, this features 2 tracks/fourteen minutes of solo Steve Roach, 3 tracks/fourteen minutes of solo Michael Stearns, 3 tracks/twenty-two minutes of Roach & Stearns together, 2 tracks/nine minutes of solo Kevin Braheny, and finally 1 track/6 minutes of Roach & Braheny together. Musically, it has a lot more layers and textures than the ‘Western Spaces’ album, and a much fuller sound throughout, but it doesn’t have the wistful quality that made the other one so special. With that said, the music on this album is quite superb! The mid-length tracks allow for a maximum expression of ideas and soundscapes within a fundamentally cosmic music field. It is also played almost entirely on synthesizers and features predominantly drifting, flowing, floating material that comes across as being beautiful, heart-warming and very atmospheric music.

HALCYON DAYS

WORLD MUSIC (SYNTH)

For this album, Steve joined a spirited super-session with didgeridoo master Stephen Kent and Indonesian and electron wizard Kenneth Newby. This recording was created during the Halycon Days of winter 1995, and it can be compared favourably to the ‘Suspended Memories’ set, where the magic of the moment was captured and laid down on tape during an extensive 10-day marathon session. Kent and Newby have played together for years and their visit to the Timeroom studios for the collaboration with Roach represented a unique chapter in the duo’s pursuit of empowered music for the "Archaic Revival".

KIVA

WORLD MUSIC (SYNTH)

This is a true Shamanic music album. It is said that actual ‘peyote’ and ‘ayahuasca’ ceremonies provided the foundation for this collaboration with Michael Stearns & Ron Sunsinger and the music they created is not for the weak hearted. The 4 directions on offer provide a symbolic symmetry to this extraordinary recording. The artists also combine recordings they made together within a labyrinth of caves in New Mexico, adding yet another ingredient to the sonic soup.

RITUAL GROUND

STYLE/LINK:ROACH, STEVE

The brainchild of Steve Roach and Elmer Schulte, this set of synth/percussion based music has passages reminiscent of Brain Eno's classic 'Sombre Reptiles' and is the point at which ambient, space, and gently rhythmic music meet in a gloriously vast synths/percussion soundscape that seems endless. The sounds are gorgeous, full and flowing, soaring and relaxing. The mood is heavenly, the feeling tranquil, and it’s all balanced by the resonance of the tastefully used percussive foundations. This is so beautiful, yet with just the right amount of edge that doesn’t send it into sickly sweet territory. In the 70's and 80s this would be hailed as classic piece of cosmic/rhythmic music. In the 90's it is just as timeless, just as classic.

AMBIENT ECLIPSE

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

Described as “Sonic navigation through dark subterranean soundscapes and iridescent ethereal realms”, this features tracks from Steve Roach, Michael Danna & Tim Clement, Jeff Pearce, Frank Quasar, and more. Musically, we're talking relaxed, spacey, cosmic, flowing, drifting soundscapes, varying in intensity and volume, from quiet to vast sounding layers of synths that soar and boom, rumbling away to glorious extent. All the tracks are exclusive to this CD and there isn't a bad one among them. The moods are pretty consistent and yet there is a wide degree of textural variation from track to track, albeit synth dominated throughout. This is definitely a ‘Synth’ album with an ‘Ambient’ flavour in terms of its slowly unfolding atmospheres rather than its actual sound. Most tracks are fairly rich and symphonic, even in such a celestial realm, and this is a beautiful late-night album.

CONVERGENT EVOLUTION

SPACE/COSMIC (SYNTH)

In terms of Space/Cosmic synth music albums with exclusive tracks and a line-up to take your breath away, this is at the top of the tree. Every single track is an absolute gem and you will hear plenty of range and variation on the theme of space synth music, not something you’d find on many such albums. The Exuviae track is warm, flowing and full-sounding; the Vir Unis track lets in rhythm to add to the dynamics of the piece; the Vidna Obmana track is suitably ethereal and slightly dark, while the Mono No Aware track adds extra layers and textures and slow rhythmic backdrops/cascades to produce a piece that is really “out there”. Steve Roach delivers a quite heavy track with percussive effects and slowly crunching exotic drums, over which a beautiful set of synth layers ebbs and flows like waves on a shore, producing an effect that is both dark, yet spacious. Jayme Washburn’s track shimmers like a heat haze on a desert plain – It’s very full sounding with sustained chords that stretch into infinity. Me rounds off the album with a piece of synth ambience that is the exact opposite to what you might imagine. Rain pours down under dark skies with a synth backdrop and surround that is dominated by a very subtly changing drone, eventually fading away and leaving you with the effect of wanting to return to the beginning and experience the whole thing once more. Quite superb and essential listening!
