AMBIENT (SYNTH)German duo Centrozoon features Markus Reuter (on Warr Guitar and featured on ‘Distant Rituals’) and Bernhard Wostheinrich (on Synthesisers). The duo has created a sound world that is both intriguing and captivating. There are few signposts in the way of rhythms or solos to be found on this 62-minute journey - Instead each track is a collaboration of equals, where the pair meld their respective sonic palettes into a work of texture, and poise. In this quest for balance, they display an almost painterly concern for the use of space, tone and colour. Each aspect of the album is assiduously compiled and compacted, with luminous motifs and phrases sweeping up through the rich layers and fading away. With so many amorphous and half-glimpsed events, it's their use of ambiguity that almost paradoxically lends ‘Blast’ its strength, ensuring that the listener remains engaged and part of the overall process. Don't be tempted to think this is tame ambient wallpaper - It's not! There is a sureness of touch that ensures the music resonates vibrantly throughout all of the 4 lengthy tracks id holds.
‘Blast’ is their first album for DiN and it contains a warm, passionate music suffused with a pulsating inner light. It’s a work of remarkable maturing clarity from two fine young players, but it is a the type of music that it is difficult to find words to describe without using all the old clichés, purely because of what it is - Space music! It is space music that hearkens back to the best parts of early 1970’s, pre-Virgin Tangerine Dream! It is full-sounding, tune-free, flowing, well arranged and performed stuff, with occasional rumbling rhythm bases and gorgeous sinewy lead synth/guitar textural masses that sail like icebergs through the cosmos. With 4 long tracks (‘Empire’ 18:34, ‘Sign’ 13:30, ‘Sense’ 13:01, ‘Blast’ 17:07) taking up the sixty-two minutes of airtime, this has all the hallmarks of becoming a cosmic music classic. So, with no a lot to say, I guess we really can’t say fairer than that.
