WALKING WITH GHOSTS (VANGELIS-LIKE EERIE MELODIES)

DREAMY/MELODIC (SYNTH)

‘Ghosts’ is David Wright at his most confident yet. It is an album full of mixed emotions, packed with thematic, memorable melodies and striking vibrant rhythms, with some that manifest themselves in such a way as to fire the imagination into dreaming up supernatural tales all of its own. This is a spooky movie for the mind – a magical collage of pure up-front melody, descriptive themes and atmospheric sounds that can tantalize and stir the imagination for one minute and then soften the soul the next. Seldom has a mix of real tunes (and there are some beautiful examples of that here) and eerie atmospherics been merged so successfully, especially when synthesizers are not always the leading voice in the tales of the unexpected. The rhythms are positively constructed and the melodies are sometimes fast and always infectious, but there is a certain subtlety to this blending of styles and sounds that, despite the subject matter, never threaten to become uneasy or strange in any way, providing the listener with the ideal balance of symphonic instrumental music and special effects required to make an album like this really work to perfection. If you need some loose points of reference, then you need look no further than, Vangelis for his film music, Jarre at his most melodic, Pink Floyd’s languid keyboard guitar tracks and Jeff Wayne’s ‘War Of The Worlds’ for these eerie alien tunes that stuck in your head forever, but there is no cloning work going on here - ‘Walking With Ghosts’ is very much an individual creation that has been influenced mostly by what has gone on in the musician’s life over the past few years and thus features some of David Wright’s most accomplished material to date. Overall, one the most satisfying ‘E.M.’ releases from a UK musician in ages!

Not only is the most confident album I’ve heard David Wright create, he has found power, dynamics and qualities you’d only thought you might find in a ’74-era Pink Floyd or ‘Blade Runner’-style Vangelis album. The whole album is continuous so that, although there are quite a few individual tracks, it essentially plays as one long seventy-four minute piece, and wends its excellent way to the stars with a mix of sheer beauty and solid strength. The way this disc builds over the first three tracks is sheer magic, as rampaging sequencer rhythms, huge swathes of lead synths, swooping keyboard backdrops and cutting electric guitar serve to say “I’m back and this is something you have to sit up and take notice”, and that is exactly what you do! It’s like Wavestar or John Dyson, only more powerful, more emotive, more expressive, plus it’s superbly played and produced. The music dies to gorgeous almost Floyd-like qualities of synths and lilting guitars for the 4th track, before taking off on another powerful voyage of electronic rhythms and melodies, layers and backdrops. The really astonishing part is just how dynamic and emotive it all is, melodic, atmospheric, subtle, strong, powerful and still retaining the romantic qualities of his previous works. By far the finest album he’s produced in years, this really is THE Dave Wright album that has to form a vital part of your synth music collection.
