THIS IS IT

CLASSIC (AMBIENT)

Out of the ashes of the Knights Of The Occasional Table (they sure know how to select a group name, don’t they?), comes a new project and a new slant on the theme of rock solid rhythms, swirling cyclical synths and ethnic samples. It’s the way that all sorts of layers of percussion, drums, samples, synths & basses converge as the music slowly accelerates and then explodes in a hail of vibrant rhythmic forces that really make this music what it is – A multi-layered, beautifully textured spread of sounds, that is cooked to perfection into a red hot sonic meal of sizzling rhythms and colourful, scintillating sounds and special effects that will repeat on you time and time again after you first digest it’s sonic delights. This is one of those albums that you play time and time again – it’s infectious, building, driving force rhythms are a pure delight, and not the sort that you easily forget. It’s a real stunner!

The first two tracks on this amazing CD really sum up what the whole album is about, and based on the evidence of what you will hear from the slowly building, but quite thunderous opener: ‘Mountain High’, I think you will agree 100% with my observations here. There is a massive drumbeat that seems to crash through the heart of the track, as all sorts of instruments of an electronic and percussive persuasion are layered on top, ranging from drums through throbbing bass, to synths of all persuasions. It really is fascinating the way the music gets it’s head of steam going, slowly at first, then picking up the pace as it grows, then, after they throw the power switch on, the beats, percussion, bass, sequencers and synths go into a heavy, mid-fast-ish paced overdrive. The music then flies off into a whole new musical dimension, and it is at that peak of perfection that it stays throughout the rest of its thirteen-minute running time – What a fantastic way to open an album! The 2nd track, ‘Bughunt Insect Identification Desk’ (fantastic title?) takes on more of the feel of ambient meets-ethnic percussion-meets-dub, but there’s so much more to it than that term implies. Again, the group use their skills of starting slowly and gradually adding spice to the simmering melting pot of sounds, then more musical ingredients are added to help the heady brew become positively addictive by the time the track is only a third of the way through - Another innovative, yet emotionally explosive cut, and a real winner that closes with one of the finest lines of slowly thundering rhythms, acid synth melodies and explosively echoed drums you’ll ever hear – A fantastic ten minutes of pure ace sounds. Yes, these two tracks really do sum up the story of the remaining 6 on this Mr Night & Mr Day album.
